What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose for cosmetic or functional reasons. Cosmetic rhinoplasty is used to change the size, shape, or proportion of the nose, while functional rhinoplasty aims to improve breathing or address structural issues (such as a deviated septum).
What can rhinoplasty fix?:Rhinoplasty can address various issues, such as:
- Cosmetic concerns: A bump on the nose, drooping tip, large nostrils, asymmetry, or overall imbalance with other facial features.
- Functional concerns: Difficulty breathing due to a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, or nasal polyps.
- Nasal injuries: Repairing damage caused by accidents or trauma.

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
Good candidates for rhinoplasty are individuals who:
- Are in good physical health.
- Have realistic expectations about the outcome.
- Are unhappy with the appearance of their nose or experience breathing issues.
- Have finished growing (typically around 16-18 years for women, 18-21 for men).
A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon can help determine if you are a suitable candidate based on your personal goals.
What are the different types of rhinoplasty?
- Cosmetic rhinoplasty: Focuses on enhancing the appearance of the nose, such as reducing the size, refining the shape, or correcting asymmetry.
- Functional rhinoplasty: Aims to correct breathing problems caused by a deviated septum, nasal obstruction, or other structural issues.
In some cases, a combination of both may be performed to improve both the form and function of the nose.
How is rhinoplasty performed?
Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The surgeon can make incisions inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or along the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) for more complex procedures (open rhinoplasty). The surgeon will then reshape the bone, cartilage, or tissue of the nose to achieve the desired result.
How long does the surgery take?
The procedure typically lasts between 1 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery and the extent of changes being made.
What is the recovery process like?
- First few days: Expect swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort. You may need to wear a splint or bandages on your nose.
- 1-2 weeks: Most swelling and bruising subside, and you can return to work or school.
- 4-6 weeks: Nasal congestion may persist, but you should be able to engage in light activities.
- Final results: Full results can take up to 12 months as residual swelling continues to decrease, particularly around the tip of the nose.
Will I have visible scars after rhinoplasty?
In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars. In open rhinoplasty, the incision is made across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils), which results in a small, discreet scar that is typically hidden by the natural contours of the nose.
